Sid Knell

Founder — Central Furniture Group · Central Apartment Group · Prime Group Australasia

Every apartment in the group’s portfolio needs furnishing, and rather than leave that to someone else, Sid Knell brought it in-house. Central Furniture Group sources and supplies the furniture behind every Central Apartment Group property, commercial-grade, AAA-compliant, and styled to feel like something a guest would choose for their own home.

From Duntroon to the Detail

Before real estate, there was the Army. Sid trained as an officer at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, and went on to serve for 15 years. It’s where he learned that logistics wins the day just as much as strategy does, that getting the right supplies to the right place, on time and at the right standard, isn’t a minor detail. It’s the job. That mindset shows up in the least glamorous, most essential part of the group’s business: making sure every apartment actually has furniture in it.

Owning the Supply Chain

When Sid built out Prime Group Australasia, he did it around a value chain approach: rather than outsourcing every part of getting an apartment hotel guest-ready, the group would own more of that chain itself. Central Furniture Group is the clearest example. It sources furniture internationally and locally, commercial-grade and hard-wearing, but designed to look nothing like it. Every piece meets Australian standards and the group’s own AAA requirements, capable of furnishing a property to a full 5-star standard when a project calls for it.

It’s a small piece of the wider group’s story, but it’s the piece a guest actually touches. It’s a philosophy Sid still talks about the same way after twenty years building the wider group:

“Reaching 20 years is a proud moment for our entire team.”

The Last Piece of the Puzzle

Central Apartment Group runs the hotels, Central Development Corporation builds them, and Central Furniture Group makes sure they’re ready to actually live in. It’s not the part of the business that makes headlines, but it’s the part every guest sits down on the day they check in. That’s still Sid’s approach after 35 years: control the details other operators are happy to outsource, and the whole experience holds together because of it.
